The “Beatles hotel” in Wellington sold this week for $5.1 million – one of several hotel deals clinched recently.

The former St George Hotel on the corner of Willis and Boulcott Streets, was sold to prominent Wellington investor Eyal Aharoni of Prime Properties. It was the Wellington base for The Beatles 1964 New Zealand tour.

Meanwhile, receivers have confirmed the sale of developer Dave Henderson’s Hotel So in Christchurch, which is expected to see recovery of South Canterbury Finance’s loan on the property and assist in the recovery of taxpayer money used in the Government bailout of the finance company’s investors.

But the really big deal of the week was the sale for about $120 million of Ibis and Novotel-branded hotels in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown.

They follow the sale of the Auckland Hyatt in a separate deal on behalf of the South Canterbury Finance receivers that should also cover most of the debt owed.

Find out more details about these and other hotel deals struck this month in Friday’s print edition of NBR.
