The number of people on the unemployment benefit rose 0.4% in July, Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says.
The figures were no great surprise coming the day after the Household Labour Force Survey showing unemployment rose from 6% to 6.8% in the June quarter.
The number of youth on the unemployed benefit rose by 1.8% in July.
The total number of New Zealanders on benefits rose 1176 from June to 334,100 in July.
Unemployment was down 2.1% in Auckland and 3.2% in Waikato but up in other areas, Ms Bennett said.
In the last month 4044 people moved off benefits and found work, she said.
"The growth in benefit numbers is slowing but we have a long way to go yet."
