Transtasman court proceedings will be simplified by a bill that passed its first reading in Parliament today.
The Transtasman Proceedings Bill implements a treaty between the New Zealand and Australian governments, and aims to make it easier to resolve legal disputes with connections on both sides of the Tasman.
The treaty was signed in July 2008.
Justice Minister Simon Power said it would enhance legal co-operation between New Zealand and Australia, reflecting the close relationship and confidence in each other's judicial and regulatory institutions.
"Since the Australia New Zealand Closer Economic Relations Agreement was signed 26 years ago it has become increasingly easy for people, goods and services to move between New Zealand and Australia," he said.
"However, little has been done to make it easier to resolve the legal disputes that inevitably arise."
The new measures will expand the range of court judgments that can be enforced between the jurisdictions, and streamline the process for enforcement.
Legislation to implement the treaty has been passed by the Australian Parliament and the legislation will come into effect in both countries at the same time.
