Former Fisher & Paykel Chief Executive John Bongard has been appointed Chair of the newly established Science for Technological Innovation National Science Challenge Board.

Hosted by Callaghan Innovation, the Challenge is comprised of researchers from all eight New Zealand Universities, three Crown Research Institutes and one independent research organisation.

It has a mission to enhance New Zealand’s capacity to use physical sciences and engineering for economic growth through innovation in areas of strength and competitive advantage.

John brings a wealth of business and governance experience to the Challenge. He has served almost 36 years with Fisher and Paykel and was CEO and Managing Director prior to his retirement in 2009.

Callaghan Innovation Chief Executive Mary Quin says Mr Bongard is the right appointment.

“John’s experience in the leadership of one of New Zealand’s most successful manufacturing firms over so many years will be invaluable. In particular, his expertise in export-driven innovation will add value to a Board committed to achieving the goals of this ambitious Challenge.”

One of John’s first acts was to formally appoint University of Auckland Professor Margaret Hyland as Challenge Director. She has been interim in this role for the last two years.

“Professor Hyland has a distinguished record in engineering and research leadership.  Her extensive
science networks and skills will I am sure be welcomed by John as he takes up the reins as Chair,” says Mary Quin.

The Challenge is supported by a science management team made up of some of the nation's most eminent engineers and scientists.

Since his retirement John has continued his involvement in the New Zealand business, enterprise and community sector by serving on Boards for organisations based in New Zealand and offshore.

He has contributed to a diverse range of organisations including Netball New Zealand, Totara Hospice, the Vodafone Events Centre Trust, Pacific Sheet and Coil (Thailand) Ltd and the National Associated Retail Traders of Australia.

John is passionate about the South Auckland community where he was raised. He is Chairman of The Rising Foundation, a programme created to develop pathways for youth alongside parents, schools and other agencies. He is also a Trustee of the Counties Manukau Pacific Trust Board.

In 2010 he was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to business.

John is joined on the Board by Craig Ellison – a recognised Māori business leader, Gottfried Pausch – a technological entrepreneur and Linda Cooper who has a proven record of success in financial and operational management in manufacturing, telecommunications and distribution businesses.
