Freightways chairman Wayne Boyd is to step down from the board after the company's annual shareholders' meeting in October and will be replaced by board member Sue Sheldon.

A director of the Reserve Bank and Contact Energy, and a former president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand, Ms Sheldon joined the Freightways board as an independent director at the same time as Mr Boyd in 2003.

Freightways said today the Mr Boyd had been an independent director and the chairman of the Freightways board since joining the company ahead of its initial public offering in September 2003.

Mr Boyd said yesterday he had reached the stage of his career where he could start looking forward to retirement and during the next few months would be relinquishing several directorships.

But he said he would be staying on as Telecom chairman until it had finished its transition through the changes in industry structure that were likely to be required by the Government's ultra fast broadband (UFB) plans.
