Brownlee prompts council 'action plan'
Christchurch City has finally adopted a proposal to clear consents backlog.
Christchurch City has finally adopted a proposal to clear consents backlog.
All is said to be resolved as Christchurch City Council finally adopts an “action plan” for building consents.
The action plan – two years after the last major earthquake – was announced by planning committee chairwoman councillor Sue Wells.
The plan confirms the council’s commitment to meeting statutory timeframes and clearing the backlog of consents.
On Monday, Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee installed a team of technical experts from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to join the council’s consenting department to speed the flow of consents.
He warned that progress would be assessed next week.
Ms Wells says she welcomes the ministry's support.
The plan outlined that staff will focus on clearing a backlog of 500 building consents which have been accepted for processing.
Currently, 1239 building consents have been submitted or are being processed. Staff claim that 4097 building consents cannot be processed because further information is required from the applicants.
The plan includes a hub for allocating work to external Building Consents Authorities, including Professional Building Consultants, Compass Building Consultants, Hastings District Council, Auckland Council and Porirua District Council.
The Southern Cluster, which includes 11 councils from the South Island, is also involved.
