Agriculture Minister David Carter plans to sweep existing wool industry organisations in favour of a new single body.
This clean slate approach was suggested the Mr Carter’s wool taskforce in a report released yesterday afternoon.
Following the release of the report, 35 wool sector leaders gathered at Premier House in Wellington with Mr Carter and agreed to adopt the eight recommendations of the report – Restoring Profitability to the Strong Wool Sector.
One of the proposals in the report was to form a single voice to act on behalf of the entire industry.
Yesterday, Mr Carter told NBR before the meeting he supported the single voice proposal and said it was vital to drive the industry forward.
“There was robust discussion at the meeting but everyone agreed that this was a vital first step in ensuring the future of the strong wool sector,” he said.
Mr Carter said he would now seek an independent convenor to begin the task of unifying the industry.
“I appreciate that this will not be an easy task and I urge all sectors of the industry to engage constructively in this process.”
