The longer term trend for more building consents seems to be consolidating after a patchy performance in recent months.
The number of new houses consented grew 22% in September 2012, compared to September 2011, Statistics New Zealand said today.
This is 45% ahead of September 2010.
There were 1520 new houses consented in September, including 186 apartments.
Canterbury and Auckland drove the increase.
Compared to August 2012, and after removing seasonal fluctuations, the number of new houses, including apartments, rose 7.8% in September 2012.
Excluding apartments, the number of new house consents increased 5.6%.
The value of new residential consents last month was $577 million, the highest value since April 2008.
At the same time, the value of non-residential building consents fell 1.8%, to $314 million.
The number of consents for hospitals, nursing homes, shops, restaurants, taverns and education buildings rose.
But consents for factories, warehouses and offices fell.
Canterbury and Auckland regions saw most growth compared to September 2011. Canterbury consents were up 176 (80%) to 396, Auckland was up 152 (50%) to 458 and Wellington increased by 54 (83%) to 119.
Canterbury was notable for a rise in Christchurch city consents, up 69 to 154, while Waimakariri district rose by 50 to 102 and Selwyn district was up 39 to 84.
