NBR journalists Tim Hunter and Nicholas Pointon have picked up major prizes at the 2025 New Zealand Shareholders’ Association journalism awards, with Hunter also named the overall Business Journalist of the Year for the fourth time.

It’s the fifth successive year NBR has won the overall award, with Hunter winning in 2024 and 2022, Pointon winning in 2023, and Maria Slade in 2021. Hunter also won the top gong in 2019.

Hunter and Pointon were joint winners of the business commentary section, while Hunter also won the business features category.

Hunter's winning entries included his Hunter's Corner column, The would-be NZME emperor has no clothes, alongside his three-part investigation into The dangerous dreams of John Denize.

Pointon, meanwhile, won for his Shoeshine column, The ‘bemusing’ world of patsy directors. It is Pointon's first year writing the Shoeshine column for NBR.

While the judges noted Hunter’s forensic approach to his work underpinning his successive Awards, Hunter noted that “the ability to be independent” was the most powerful factor in creating a great story.

Other category winners included the NZ Herald's Jenée Tibshraeny for business news while Newsroom's Jonathan Milne won the new business broadcasting category. Fellow Newsroom journalist Alice Peacock was also awarded young business journalist of the year.

NZSA chief executive Oliver Mander said that vested interests should not matter for journalists.

"Your roles serve the public interest, thriving on independence and evidence to create credibility in your work."

It was the eighth edition of the NZ Business Journalism Awards hosted by NZSA. The awards were supported by Simplicity and the NZX, with NBR publishers Todd and Jackie Scott supporting the new business broadcasting category.

Gyles Beckford, Jenni McManus, and James Hollings were once again the three judges.
