New Zealand market steadies, but Australian shares tumble

UPDATED:  Investors in New Zealand held their nerve as the NZX50 recovered slightly after an early-morning tumble.

The index of New Zealand's 50 biggest listed companies had fallen 1.54% to 10,683 points by lunchtime but closed at the end of day on 10,697 points, down 1.41%.
