Cawthron Institute joins FoodHQ

The Cawthron Institute has become the newest member of the FoodHQ research collaboration,.

The institute joins founder members AgResearch, AsureQuality, ESR, Fonterra, Massey University, Plant & Food Research, the Riddet Institute and BCC, Manawatu’s business development agency.

Cawthron’s chief executive, Professor Charles Eason, says it’s essential seafood is represented alongside agri-foods in this collaboration. 

“We see FoodHQ as a great opportunity to help add value to New Zealand’s food export economy,” he says Professor Eason.

Nelson-based Cawthron specialises in aquaculture, with a focus on production, protection and adding value to seafood.

It employs almost 200 scientists, laboratory technicians, researchers and specialist staff. Its facilities include biosecure and fully accredited laboratories and the purpose-built Cawthron Aquaculture Park at Glenhaven near Nelson’s Boulder Bank.

With the exception of Cawthron and ESR, the research and innovation members of FoodHQ are located alongside each other in Palmerston North’s Fitzherbert Science Park and Massey University’s Manawatū campus.

In total, FoodHQ encompasses more than 2200 food scientists, engineers, researchers, PhD students, professionals and educators.
