Chief government statistician Geoff Bascand will leave Statistics New Zealand in May to take up a senior role at the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.
Mr Bascand will leave his chief executive's role after six years in the job with timing that will allow him to see through the March 5 national census, which was delayed two years by the February 2011 Christchurch earthquakes.
He will become a deputy governor and head of operations at the RBNZ, having led Statistics NZ through substantial organisational changes.
He has previously held senior positions at the Department of Labour and Treasury, and has worked as a senior economist at the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC.
The State Services Commission will be advertising for a new Government Statistician.
