Telecom's network division, Chorus, has begun a $3.3m project to deploy 55 kilometres of fibre optic cable from Hawera to Opunake via Manaia to increase broadband speeds in the region.

The project is scheduled to be completed by Christmas and is part of a broader plan to upgrade Telecom's fibre optic network nationwide.

Earlier this week, Telecom formalised its offer to spin off Chorus into a standalone company as part of of its refined Crown Fibre bid.

The so-called "Chorus2" proposal will be put to a shareholder vote early next year, said chief executive Paul Reynolds.

Telecom's fibre optic network can be viewed online on the Ministry of Economic Development's National Broadband Map at www.broadbandmap.govt.nz
