Chorus [NZX: CNU] stole the show at last night’s TVNZ Marketing Awards, with its Gigatown campaign taking out the supreme award and winning both its categories.

The Langham, ad land’s favourite venue, was filled to the brim with excited marketers from around the country. The event, run by New Zealand Marketing Magazine and the Marketing Association, was again hosted by comedian Te Radar decked out in inappropriately tight, shiny underwear.

The winning year-long Gigatown campaign, which was launched in October 2013, was praised by judges for engaging civil, business and consumer approaches to accelerate the uptake of fibre in New Zealand communities.

Along with marketing partners Contagion, Waxeye and Chameleon Partners, Chorus also picked up wins for the utilities/communications and technology categories.

Other winners included the Health Promotion Agency, Douglas Pharmaceuticals, Mediaworks (which Te Radar awkwardly noted “needs some good news”), Air New Zealand and SkyCity. Mitre 10 claimed two awards for marketing leadership and retail categories.

Marketer of the Year was awarded to Foodstuffs’ Jules Lloyd-Jones, who oversaw Pak ‘N Save’s stickman campaign and New World’s netball sponsorship.

Sam Forrest from Frucor Beverages took out the Rookie Marketer of the Year award, and was commended by judges for his development of V’s brand image.

The Marketing Hall of Fame also saw a new inductee announced at the awards ceremony. Theresa Gattung, co-founder of My Food Bag and former Telecom chief executive, was inducted for her long history of marketing accolades. She joins laureates Geoff Ross, George Hickton and Bill Peake.

The export category had only one finalist, Christchurch-based Tait Communications, the only winner without a representative on hand to accept its award. Sustainability and culture both had no finalists but were still included in the night’s programme.
