Christchurch Airport broke all its own records, with more than 550,000 passenger movements in March – the highest ever number of domestic passengers and a record number of international passengers.
Christchurch Airport chief executive Jim Boult said the latest figures show the travel industry is coming out of “its worst recession.”
“These record numbers are great news for our tourism industry and show the strong appeal of Christchurch, Canterbury and the South Island as a destination.”
The total passenger movements last month was a 4% increase from previous March month, with domestic passenger numbers up 3% and international passengers up 6%.
Christchurch International Airport was ranked the country’s second largest airport in 2009.
CIA is owned and operated by Christchurch International Airport (CIAL), which was established as in 1988, and its ownership is now shared by Christchurch City Holdings with 75% and the New Zealand government with 25%.
In 2009, Christchurch Airport won three International Routes Marketing awards, as well as being awarded NZ Airport of the Year for its marketing strategy.
