Christchurch City Council has adopted a policy regulating where legal highs can be sold
People selling legal highs in Christchurch now have their own special precinct.
The city council has adopted a Psychoactive Products Retail Locations Policy.
It means the council can direct where legal high retailers can ply their psychoactive trade.
According to a supplied map the area appears to encompass much of the new central business district. (See map below)
The policy is being adopted ahead of the expected lifting of a temporary government ban on the sale of psychoactive products.
The Psychoactive Substances Act came into effect in July 2013 and regulates the importation, manufacture, sale, supply and possession of psychoactive substances.
The act allows councils to develop policies on the location of approved psychoactive-product retailers in its district.
Approved retail premises will not be permitted within 50m of each other or within 100m of a “sensitive site” – such as playgrounds, early childhood centres, schools, tertiary institutions and specialist drug and alcohol treatment and support services – at the time the application for a licence is made.
