Power suppliers are urging Christchurch residents to avoid downed powerlines and turn off all gas appliances and their gas mains, after reports of gas leaks following the quake.

Contact Energy said it was preparing to shut off the gas supply as a precaution.

It has advised its pipeline reticulation customers whose premises have beendamaged, or who have any concerns about a possible leak or damage to appliances to open all doors and windows if they smell gas and turn off Opendoors and windows, especially if they smell gas and turn off the LPG supply to the premises.

Customers who are supplied LPG from large (45kg) bottles attached to theirpremises should check the bottles for damage and turn them off if they had any concerns.

Power line operator Orion estimated electricity was down across 80 per centof Christchurch, although there are pockets of Hornby and Riccaton that still have power.

Residents should consider any downed lines as live and avoid contact withthem, Orion said. The company will have a better idea of when power can be restored by 5pm.
