The port's coal handling facilities have been closed for repairs since Christchurch's February 22 earthquake, forcing the delay of two export coal shipments.
Solid Energy communications manager Bryn Somerville said Lyttelton reopened to coal trains on Saturday, when trains from the West Coast again began offloading at the Lyttelton stockpile.
This had relieved pressure on stockpiles at Stockton opencast mine, Ngakawau and Reefton.
KiwiRail would run up to five trains a day, shifting 7500 tonnes a day, for the foreseeable future.
A week ago, Solid Energy began trucking 1000 tonnes of coal a day from Stockton to stockpile at Reefton, to free up stockpile space at Stockton and Ngakawau. Mr Somerville said trucking was expected to continue until next Saturday.
