The full list of winners is out from the Spikes Asia ceremony, and Colenso BBDO dominated the Kiwi medal haul.

The agency won 15 awards, mostly for work with clients Mars NZ and DB Breweries.

DDB NZ followed with nine. The only other NZ agencies with wins were Clemenger BBDO, TBWA\Digital Arts Network and DraftFCB.

The awards, often dubbed “Asian Cannes”, announced 397 winners last night from a record-breaking 4860 entries.

Clemenger BBDO managing director Nick Garrett told NBR ONLINE New Zealand’s creative success in Asia is vital.

“We have clients that operate in this region and when we get a chance to profile our work we embrace it, we want to export more creative into Asia.

“Spikes Asia is a global awards show and it is the most important award show in Asia Pacific.”

Among DDB’s awards was a silver spike for its McDonald’s Olympics ad Staying Up late. Managing Director Justin Mowday says the ad is a good example of how a piece of work can transcend culture.

“That ad was a good McDonald’s ad anywhere in the world. A great piece of work can stand up anywhere.”

Mr Mowday says Spikes Asia is an important awards show to win at.

“It shows the growing strength of creativity across the Asia Pacific region to have our own pre-eminent show in the area that is difficult and respected.

“The level of judging is extraordinary.”

Mr Mowday said participating in big shows with more creditability meant agencies could really feel proud of their work.

“And it avoids all the nuances of local shows with local judges and that sort of thing.”
