ANZ NZ chief executive Antonia Watson has been elected chair of the New Zealand Banking Association (NZBA) and took up the role today.
Westpac NZ chief executive Catherine McGrath was elected deputy chair. The chair and deputy chair take on their respective roles for two years.
Watson said in a statement that as chair, she looked forward to representing the industry and supporting a banking system “that remains strong, competitive and focused on the needs of New Zealanders”.
The New Zealand banking system was “well-run, well-capitalised, well-funded and well-regulated”, she said.
“Events in the Middle East are a reminder of how quickly a global shock ripples through our economy, and the role banks play supporting customers as they navigate global challenges.”
Watson replaces BNZ chief executive Dan Huggins, who has chaired the association over the past two years.
Established in 1891, NZBA advocates for 17 member banks, all of which are banks registered by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. It also has six affiliate members that support the banking industry.
