Downer Group has appointed Murray Robertson to the newly created executive role of managing director New Zealand.

Robertson is a highly respected leader in the New Zealand infrastructure sector, bringing a deep understanding of the local landscape and extensive industry experience. In his 17 years with the company, he has held a number of senior executive roles, including most recently as chief operating officer of Downer’s Transport & Infrastructure business.

“This new executive position reflects Downer’s continued commitment to strong local leadership in New Zealand and will ensure our operations remain aligned with national priorities and opportunities,” Downer Group chief executive Peter Tompkins said.

“Over the past two years, Downer has made a number of deliberate and decisive moves to become a more agile trans-Tasman organisation. This shift has proven successful, delivering tangible benefits for Downer and our customers.

“Murray’s appointment will build on that momentum and send a strong signal of commitment to our New Zealand customers.”

Robertson will lead Downer’s New Zealand-wide strategy, stakeholder relationships, governance activities, and act as a key voice across government, industry, and community partners. He will work closely with Downer’s cultural leaders and Social Impact team to strengthen connections to place, people, and purpose.

In addition, Robertson will also lead Downer’s New Zealand Transport & Infrastructure operations – including maintenance and operations, infrastructure projects, and Hawkins.

A chartered engineer and fellow of Engineering New Zealand, and a chartered member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors with an MBA from the University of Auckland, Robertson’s strong governance credentials and enduring connection to the New Zealand industry and professional community position him to lead Downer through its next phase of growth.

“Murray’s leadership will be critical to ensuring we maintain a strong and coordinated presence across the country, and are well-positioned to capture growth opportunities,” Tompkins said.
