Duncan Cotterill has announced the promotion of four new partners: Chris Thomas, Edwin Boshier, Juliet Short, and Nick Laing, pending Law Society approval. With that, Duncan Cotterill will have 49 partners across five offices making it the second (equal) largest New Zealand law firm by partner number.

Duncan Cotterill partner and board chair Richard Lang commented: “These promotions reflect the demand we are seeing, from our clients, for commercially focused legal advice and great service.

“The inclusion of Juliet brings the count of female partners to 16 (32% of our partnership). As a group Chris, Edwin, Juliet, and Nick have considerable and diverse experience including agribusiness, health and safety, insurance, insolvency and restructuring, litigation and dispute resolution, mergers and acquisitions, public law, and technology. The partners and I are delighted to have them join us.”

Chris Thomas (Wellington) is a corporate and commercial lawyer who advises startups and growth companies in New Zealand’s burgeoning tech sector. Thomas’s clients include fast-growing New Zealand companies in the gaming, SaaS, fintech, agritech, FMCG, biotech, and medical technology sectors. Thomas also advises a number of domestic and international venture capital firms investing into New Zealand companies.

Corporate and commercial lawyer Juliet Short (Auckland) offers strategic and practical legal support to business owners. With a background in private practice and in-house experience in primary sector/FMCG and financial services clients, Short will continue to focus on business establishments, restructuring, mergers and acquisitions, and contract drafting and negotiation.

Nick Laing (Nelson) is an experienced litigation lawyer with expertise in civil and commercial litigation, resolving diverse disputes (including in tribunals, mediations, arbitrations, and all levels of courts).
