Enviro NZ has today announced the appointment of James Rutter to the role of chief executive.

Chair Richard Pearson said Rutter was well placed to lead the business through its next phase of growth. “On behalf of the Board and everyone at Enviro NZ, I’m pleased to welcome James as our new CEO. This is an exciting time for our organisation, as we set our sights on furthering innovation and new opportunities that create value for our customers and our communities,” says Pearson.

“With a wealth of experience honed over the course of a 16-year career with Enviro NZ, James is deeply respected both in our business and across the wider industry. His expertise and strong, measured leadership will be a tremendous asset in driving towards our strategic goals.”

Rutter joined Enviro NZ in 2010 as an engineer and, over the course of his tenure, has led multi-functional teams across a range of senior leadership roles, before being appointed chief operating officer in 2022.

“James has played a critical role in shaping the future direction of our business alongside our executive team, and his elevation to chief executive is a key enabler in delivering the goals laid out in our strategy,” said Pearson

Rutter also serves as a director of Midwest Disposals Ltd and Northern Waste Handling, two of Enviro NZ’s joint venture partnerships. He holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and has completed the general management program at Melbourne Business School.

Rutter said he was proud to be appointed CEO at a time of significant growth for the business. “It is a genuine honour to have this opportunity to lead our teams and work alongside them in creating value for our partners as we lead sustainable resource recovery on behalf of all New Zealanders.

“Enviro NZ is a business built on the strength of its people and, over the past 16 years, I’ve been fortunate to work alongside high-performing teams across every part of the business. We operate on an ethos of ‘one team’ – it is what drives us to succeed together, and something I care deeply about continuing to foster at Enviro NZ,” he said.

Rutter will step into the CEO role effective immediately.
