Respected media leader Simon Teagle has been appointed as the first chief executive of Independent Media Agencies New Zealand (Imanz).

Teagle’s 30-year career spans senior agency leadership roles at DDB, Saatchi & Saatchi, ZenithOptimedia, and FCB Media where he worked with many of New Zealand’s most recognised brands. Most recently, Teagle spent eight years as general manager at Go Media, New Zealand’s largest locally owned outdoor advertising company.

Imanz represents more than 90% of New Zealand-owned independent media agencies and has grown to 42 member agencies and 28 partners in just over a year. Moving to a CEO-led structure signals an evolution and long-term commitment from Imanz to its burgeoning member base, having launched in 2023 under a general manager model.

Teagle said: “Imanz has achieved a great deal in a short time, which is a credit to the members, partners, and the team driving it forward. Having worked with both independent and global agencies, I know their different operating models, which is why I am a champion for the innovation and stronger publisher relationships that independents deliver.

“I want to actively build on our momentum and create more opportunities for our members to win more business, strengthen relationships with publishers, and deliver better outcomes for clients. The upshot will be stronger outcomes for New Zealand’s marketers – a big boost for the local economy by supporting truly local businesses, which will help media suppliers invest in the talent and products that attract audiences.”

Imanz chair Alex Radford said: “Imanz has always been about giving New Zealand’s independents a stronger voice and creating a level playing field with the bigger networks. We have built a solid base of members and partners, but the most important work is still ahead of us as the pace of change across the industry continues to accelerate, posing increasing challenges for businesses at all levels.

“Simon’s leadership, industry relationships, and understanding of both agency and media owner perspectives puts Imanz in a great position to deliver more value and generate increased influence for our members.”

Radford also thanked outgoing general manager Kath Mitchell for her work in establishing Imanz: “Kath’s leadership has been pivotal in our growth as an organisation. She played a key role in building member and partner trust, enhancing our advocacy efforts, and laying strong operational foundations for the future.”

The appointment comes at a time of significant opportunity for independent media agencies, with Imanz focused on ensuring New Zealand majority-owned businesses can compete and thrive in a fast-evolving media landscape. The organisation has established strong relationships with national and international bodies including IMAA in Australia, IAB, NPA, OOHMAA, and RBA reinforcing its ability to collaborate across borders and share best practice.
