Leading regulatory trial lawyer Jacob Barry has left Meredith Connell to join commercial disputes firm Lindsay Francis & Mangan (LFM).

In his last three years at Meredith Connell, Barry led its competition and consumer litigation practice.

LFM partner Kim Francis said Barry was a “fantastic trial advocate” and would bring a “great range of experience” to the firm.

“We frequently find ourselves acting for clients dealing with intense regulatory scrutiny, and Jacob's unique expertise across commercial and criminal cases in New Zealand's trial and appellate courts is a great addition to the firm.”

Barry said he was keen to join the firm because of its “fundamental understanding of business, and commitment to bringing best practice and powerful advocacy to the resolution of business disputes”.

Barry has conducted over 80 criminal trials in the District Court and High Court in both criminal and regulatory matters.

He sits on the prosecution panels for the Commerce Commission and Serious Fraud Office, and is the deputy chair of the Sport Integrity Commission's Disciplinary Panel.

He has led a range of high-profile matters, including representing the Commerce Commission in recently filed cartel proceedings against Harcourts Group and proceedings against Winstone Wallboards Ltd for alleged anti-competitive rebate practices.

He also acted in New Zealand's first criminal cartel proceeding (R v Mardom Limited), representing Godfrey Hirst in greenwashing proceedings against Bremworth, and acted as lead counsel for the Crown in the criminal proceedings arising from Operation Beverly.

Lindsay Francis & Mangan is a specialist law firm dedicated to complex commercial and regulatory litigation and international arbitration, and has offices in Auckland, Singapore, and Sydney.
