Former Securities Commission head Jane Diplock has been appointed chair of a board that oversees a global body involved in sustainability reporting standards.

Diplock has been on the GRI Supervisory Board for two years, and will take up the new role from January 1.

The decision-making body is responsible for overseeing organisational priorities and strategy at GRI, the provider of the world's most widely used sustainability reporting standards.

Her appointment is one of several key appointments announced today to non-executive oversight bodies that guide future direction and policy at GRI.

She said in a statement that GRI Standards played a vital role in ensuring organisations provided valuable and accessible sustainability information, which addressed their impacts on people and the planet.

“As GRI looks ahead to celebrating our thirtieth year in 2027, we are well-positioned to steer the future of reporting through our consensus-building, collaborative approach. Together, we can ensure that sustainability reporting unlocks corporate accountability and is the catalyst for change.”

Outgoing chair Jessica Fries noted the board had to deal with “political headwinds and global sustainability challenges” in recent years.  However, GRI's mission was “more important than ever before”, she said. “I am pleased to hand over the baton to someone with Jane's wisdom, experience and commitment to the role that reporting can play in creating a sustainable world.”

Diplock, who is based in Wellington, was chair of the NZ Securities Commission from 2001 to 2011. She is also a former chair of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (Iosco).

She holds dual Australian and New Zealand citizenship, and in 2003 was awarded an Officer of the General Division of the Order of Australia for her contribution to business and commerce.
