The Law Association president Tony Herring has announced the appointment of Clayton Kimpton as its new chief executive.

A highly skilled lawyer and distinguished diplomat, Kimpton’s professional experience extends to governance, strategy, law, policy development, foreign affairs, and trade. As well as leading and working with organisations to drive business success, he is experienced in navigating stakeholder landscapes, diplomacy, and forging long-term strategic partnerships.

“After a significant search, I am incredibly proud that Clayton has chosen to join The Law Association team,” said Herring. “His extensive background in law, public service, and leadership will be invaluable to our organisation, our members, and the wider New Zealand legal profession.”

Formerly with Kensington Swan (now known as Dentons Kensington Swan) as both a partner and four-time executive chair, he focused on key commercial clients with a growth and international perspective. This extended to working with specialist teams in advocacy services, government, infrastructure, and finance sectors.

Presented with the opportunity to grow his career, Kimpton left the legal sector to take up offshore roles including the Consul-General to Dubai and the Northern Emirates, UAE; as well as regional director for IMEA with New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. After more than 10 years of living in the UAE, he returned home to Aotearoa in 2023.

Kimpton said he was excited about joining The Law Association in the role of chief executive. “I am looking forward to working with the council, committees, and The Law Association team to further connect, develop, and deepen the relationship we have with our members. In leading the only independent representative body for the legal profession New Zealand-wide, he said, “my mandate is to represent our members to Government, the judiciary, and the wider profession.”

Herring said: “As The Law Association continues to grow, I am very much looking forward to working with Clayton and redefining our strategic positioning.

“We are well set to lead, innovate, and disrupt within the legal sector nation-wide.”

Kimpton will commence his role in early April 2024.
