Samira Taghavi, council member, convenor of The Law Association’s Public and Administrative Law Committee and a member of its Criminal Law Committee and CPD Committee, has been elected vice-president of The Law Association of New Zealand at a council meeting.
Taghavi is a criminal defence barrister who came to New Zealand from Iran to complete her Master of Laws at the University of Auckland. Barrister and practice manager at ActiveLegal, she has been a strong and consistent supporter of The Law Association for the past six years and was actively involved in the inaugural Criminal Law Forum in 2025. She has also fostered and maintained strong working relationships across the judiciary.
Her committee work reflects her commitment to the profession. As convenor of the Public and Administrative Law Committee and a member of the Criminal Law Committee, she has contributed to submissions, law reform discussions, and the advancement of legal practice in New Zealand.
The Law Association president Tony Herring congratulated Taghavi on her election and said he also wanted to acknowledge the contribution of outgoing vice-president Julie-Anne Kincade KC, who will continue to work with The Law Association as a council member.
“Julie-Anne has given a tremendous amount to this organisation and we are deeply grateful for her service. Samira steps into the role with exceptional credentials and a genuine commitment to the people in this profession. The Law Association exists to support every lawyer at every step of their professional journey, and Samira has demonstrated that commitment throughout her involvement with us.”
Taghavi said: “I am deeply honoured to have been appointed as vice-president of The Law Association and step into this role with both pride and a strong sense of responsibility. The Law Association has been an important part of my legal career, and it has been a privilege to contribute to its growth in recent years, including a significant increase in membership and a strengthened focus on supporting our practitioners. My focus is to represent our members, to be a clear and effective voice on their behalf, and to ensure that the rule of law remains the guiding principle of our profession.”
