Former Westpac chief executive David McLean is the new independent chair of the Financial Services Council (FSC).
The council's members include the major insurers, fund managers, KiwiSaver and workplace savings schemes (including restricted schemes), professional service providers, and technology providers to the financial services sector.
He succeeds Rob Flannagan, who has been in the role for more than a decade.
FSC chief executive Kirk Hope said McLean brought a wealth of governance experience and a strong background in the financial services sector that would be of “significant benefit” to the FSC and its members.
McLean retired as CEO of Westpac NZ in June 2021 , having had a career as a lawyer and banker. He is a former chair of KiwiRail, the NZ Bankers Association, Champions for Change, and a former chair and Distinguished Fellow of the Institute of Finance Professionals (Infinz).
He also chairs Kiwi Group Capital, Weel Holdings Pty, and is a member of the Council of Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington.
In a statement, he said he was looking forward to “supporting outcomes that benefit both the industry and New Zealanders”.
Hope said he wanted to acknowledge Flannagan’s exceptional leadership, commitment, and contribution during an “outstanding tenure” as chair.
“On behalf of the FSC board, members, and the wider industry, we extend our deepest thanks to Rob for his dedication and vision throughout his time as chair. His contribution leaves a strong legacy that has shaped the direction and impact of the FSC over the past decade,” he said.
