Ken Shirley will replace Doug Leeder as the Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s appointee to the board of Port of Tauranga.
The council owns 54.14% of the NZX-listed port company through its investment arm, Quayside Holdings.
Shirley has been a Bay of Plenty regional councillor since his election in 2022. He is a former Minister of Fisheries and Associate Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Health and has also held several executive roles, including chief executive of Organics Aotearoa New Zealand, Medicines New Zealand, the New Zealand Forest Owners Association, and the Road Transport Forum.
He is currently chair of Ōmokoroa Golf Club and was formerly a director of GNS Science and a member of the Human Rights Review Tribunal.
Shirley will replace Leeder on the board from April 1.
Port of Tauranga chair Julia Hoare said Shirley brought decades of leadership experience across public policy, industry advocacy and executive governance, and thanked Leeder for an “outstanding contribution” to the board during his decade-long tenure.
“We thank him for his long service to the port and to the regional council, where he served as chair from 2016 until his retirement at the 2025 election.”
