BMW is switching drivers after what it describes as a strong performance over the past three years in New Zealand.
Francois Roca, who is currently executive director of BMW’s operations in Japan, will take over as managing director of the New Zealand business from Adam Shaver on July 1.
Shaver is moving to a new position as head of global used car strategy and steering at the company's headquarters in Munich.
BMW, which manages the BMW, Mini, Rolls-Royce and BMW Motorrad brands, noted today that Shaver had introduced a new business structure and operating model during his time in New Zealand. This had seen the company reclaim the number one position in the premium segment for the first time in a decade.
BMW’s overall market share in New Zealand increased from 1.4% in 2022 to 2.2% in April 2025, it said. Its premium segment share also rose from 15.7% to 19.6%. That trend had continued, with quarter one registrations increasing 18.6%.
BMW’s senior vice president of Asia Pacific, Eastern Europe, Middle East & Africa, Jean-Philippe Parain, said Shaver had delivered strong results in challenging market conditions and significantly strengthened relationships with its national retail network of 10 dealers.
“We thank Adam for his outstanding leadership and the exceptional results he has achieved alongside the local team and our dealer network,” said Parain. “We look forward to welcoming him back to the company’s head office in Munich and look forward to his continued contribution in his new global role.”
He noted that Roca would bring more than 21 years of international automotive experience to the role, having held senior positions in marketing, sales, and dealer development across Europe, Asia Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa. “His global perspective and leadership experience will be a valuable asset to our New Zealand operations.”
Roca said he was looking forward to learning more about the local market and working closely with the company’s retail partners.
