On the fourth anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the New Zealand–Ukraine Business Association (NZUBA) has announced the appointments of Tenby Powell as president, Kate Turska as vice-president, and Ailish Dodd as treasurer, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the organisation.

“The mission remains the same – to facilitate meaningful connections and provide advice on doing business between New Zealand and Ukraine – and the glue that connects our two countries has never been stronger,” said Powell.

“While the two countries have maintained cordial diplomatic relations since Ukraine became an independent sovereign nation on August 24, 1991, the real binding force today is the grassroots, people-to-people solidarity, forged through the humanitarian and military support by the New Zealand Government, augmented by a significant effort of many Kiwi volunteers and soldiers, who have stepped up to help Ukrainians facing brutal hardship.”

“The board reflects a shared commitment to building deeper commercial, innovation, and institutional links between New Zealand and Ukraine. For many of us, this work is deeply personal while also being strategic. New Zealand businesses have a real capability to contribute to Ukraine’s recovery and long-term economic resilience; the engagement must start now, not once the war ends,” said Turska.

“The NZUBU, which is supported by the Auckland Business Chamber, encourages both large and small New Zealand businesses to talk to us about how to develop meaningful connections with Ukraine now to ensure relationships are evolving even during wartime.”

And it’s a two-way street, said Powell, “New Zealand welcomes foreign investment that benefits the economy and Ukrainians will be treated like many countries under standard rules.”

Together with newly appointed board member, Phil O’Reilly – past CEO of BusinessNZ, founder of Iron Duke Partners, and a fierce advocate for New Zealand business for more than two decades – Powell and Turska bring extensive leadership, governance, and international experience across the public and private sectors, as well as a long-standing commitment to Ukraine-New Zealand relations.

“I want to thank Jonathan Howe, Rouben Azizian, and Olga Dodd for their leadership and commitment to launching the NZUBA at a very challenging time,” said Powell.

“They have created a firm base from which members can engage government, industry, and community stake holders in New Zealand and Ukraine, which will be particularly relevant as Ukraine enters a post-war phase.”
