Nearly seven years after quitting the law to co-found and run New Zealand’s largest hop grower, Brian Clayton has returned to legal practice.
With family members, Clayton co-founded Clayton Hops in 2019. The company has more than 400 hectares of hop garden in the Tasman region.
He will join Russell McVeagh’s real estate and construction team from next month.
Clayton has more than two decades’ experience advising on large-scale and complex construction projects across New Zealand, Australia, the Pacific, the EU and UK, the Middle East and Africa.
Admitted to practice in three jurisdictions, he has expertise across many sectors, including energy and renewables, infrastructure, healthcare and education.
Before leaving to found Clayton Hops, he created and led the construction and major projects practice at law firm Chapman Tripp. Before that, he was head of construction for the Middle East and Africa at Shearman & Sterling (now A&O Shearman) in Abu Dhabi.
Board chair David Butler said the appointment further strengthened the firm’s market-leading capabilities in construction. “His extensive sector knowledge will be a huge asset to our firm and clients, and ensures we are even better placed to support clients through every stage of their projects, from planning and procurement through to delivery and dispute resolution."
Clayton will be working closely with the firm's other construction experts, including Anna Crosbie, Ed Crook and Michael Taylor.
