The board of Sanford Ltd has appointed Antony (Tony) Carter to the board as an independent director, with effect from February 17.

Carter has extensive governance experience across a broad range of sectors, including consumer, technology, agriculture, industrial services, infrastructure, and energy. He transitioned into governance after a successful executive career, including a decade as chief executive and managing director at Foodstuffs.

Sanford chair Sir Rob McLeod welcomed Carter to the Sanford board: “We are fortunate to be able to welcome a director of Tony’s calibre, whose depth of skills and experience will be an invaluable addition to our board. We appreciate the strong support conveyed by shareholders with whom we discussed Tony’s potential appointment.”

Currently, Carter is chair of Datacom Group, My Food Bag, The Skin Institute, The Interiors Group, and TR Group, and a director of The Warehouse Group and Ravensdown. Previously, he was chair of Air New Zealand and Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, and a director of Fletcher Building, ANZ Bank New Zealand, and Vector. He was also chair of the New Zealand Institute when it merged with the New Zealand Business Roundtable to form the New Zealand Initiative in 2012, where he served as inaugural co-chair until 2013.

Carter said: “I am excited to join the Sanford board. Fishing and aquaculture are important industries for New Zealand and I am looking forward to contributing to the success of the company.”

Carter holds a Bachelor of Engineering with honours from the University of Canterbury and a Master of Philosophy from Loughborough University of Technology in the UK. In 2020, he was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to business governance.

He will retire and seek election by shareholders at Sanford’s 2026 annual shareholders’ meeting.

After careful consideration of all relevant matters, the Sanford board has determined that Carter is an independent director for the purposes of the NZX Listing Rules.
