The Ministry of Education’s proposed sale of land near Kapiti schools has raised the ire of local government, with the mayor speaking out in complaint.

A section which sits near  Kapiti College, Raumati Beach School and Raumati Beach kindergarten has been declared surplus by the Ministry of Education.

But Kapiti Coast mayor Jenny Rowan said the government made the decision to put the section up for sale despite being aware the local community valued it.

Because of its location, the community saw the land as ideal for education facilities to be expanded on in future.

“Increases in the rolls of adjacent schools have continued at a significantly higher rate than predicted by the Ministry,” Ms Rowan said.

“College and primary school rolls continue to grow and yet there are no plans for another college or expanded facilities.”

Ms Rowan has written letters to Minister of Education Anne Tolley and the Ministry of Education’s regional manager about the issue.

“It alarms me that the shortsighted decision to sell the land in Raumati appears to have no basis. In fact it is imperative that this land is retained for future education needs,” Ms Rowan said.
