The swindling Swney, a paroled Petricevic and more goings on with the $400 million Hugh Green family estate all feature in news from the courts this week.
On Wednesday, NBR revealed the Heart of the City had settled its civil claim against its former boss, Alex Swney, who in June was sentenced to five years and seven months jail after admitting to more than $4 million in tax evasion and fraud.
NBR court reporter Hamish McNicol says the details of the settlement are confidential but the Auckland business organisation claims it has recovered the “large majority” of money it says Swney transferred into two trusts.
The settlement was reached without any admission of liability, however.
On Thursday, the family feud over the late NBR Rich Lister Hugh Green’s $400 million business empire returned to court.
Hugh’s daughter, Maryanne, successfully overturned a will which dropped her as a trustee in June this year, after which she was reinstated.
But now her siblings are applying to remove her as a trustee, and in the meantime are seeking interim relief removing her powers as a trustee.
Mr McNicol says a court order, however, says she currently has no power as a trustee, but the continuation of that was this week argued before Justice Helen Winkelmann, who is pleased it will be her last hearing of the case.
Finally, former Bridgecorp boss and convicted fraudster Rod Petricevic was this week granted parole on his third application.
Mr McNicol shares some insight as to what NBR Online readers made of the decision.
