Chris Cairns’ perjury trial has dominated a Kim Dotcom-sized hole in court news this week but NBR has spent some time carving up a few cases closer to home.
Last week, listed food and beverage investor Veritas Investments announced it would be seeking leave to appeal an arbitrator’s ruling against it regarding meat patties and Burger King.
NBR court reporter Hamish McNicol spoke to DLA Piper partner Iain Thain about the process for appealing an arbitral award, and found it’s a lot more than a “rubber-stamping process,” with arbitral decisions viewed as being more “final” than court decisions.
Relatedly, the liquidation of one of the franchisees of Veritas business Mad Butcher ended this week, with a more than $400,000 hole left for creditors.
He says only $22,000 was paid out in distributions to creditors of the old Mad Butcher Henderson store, which has since resumed under head office control.
At least eight Mad Butcher stores have gone into liquidation since 2012.
