The Sydney-based master yachtsman and luxury car dealer shows no sign of slowing down now he is in his 70s. He owns the Ateco Group, which imports a range of European, Korean and Chinese marques into New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.
He gave up racing touring cars in 1990 to switch to blue sea yachting, winning line hours in the Sydney-Hobart race in 2002 and 2009. He was a founder of Alloy Yachts, which built his first racing yacht, Chanel, and effectively launched the New Zealand superyacht industry. However, the business closed in 2015 when the industry went into decline.
He is now enjoying the 47m Heesen-built luxury motor yacht Como, bought last year. It is on the market at E19,750,000 while Mr Crichton considers whether to build another racing superyacht.
In May last year, he was credited with Sydney society’s wedding of the year held at the University of Sydney's historic Great Hall, which was specially renovated for the occasion. The bride was 38-year-old Bosnia-born Nadi Hasandedic, a former Christian Dior boutique manager.
The Crichtons’ latest property acquisition is the fourth residence he has owned on Sydney’s Point Piper waterfront. It said to be worth $A45 million and situated next door to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s mansion.
