The marine safety charge paid by cruise ships will be reduced from October 1 this year, Transport Minister Steven Joyce said today.

The per passenger charge of $8.29 will go down to $3.30.

Mr Joyce said Maritime NZ had collected more money than had been anticipated, or required, from the industry.

When the charge was set in August 2008 it was anticipated it would generate $2 million each year to support Maritime NZ's safety, regulatory and monitoring functions.

An increase in the number of visiting ships resulted in revenue of about $3.8 million.

Mr Joyce said the reduction would further stimulate the already growing cruise ship industry.
