The seller of $47.1 million worth of dairy farms to Dairy Farms NZ is a company associated with Cornelius (Kees) Zeestraten.
His company, Southern Sights, was behind the unsuccessful attempt to set up a cubicle cow regime in the Mackenzie Basin in 2009 the central South Island.
The proposal attracted strong opposition to the concept of factory farming.
A resource consent was eventually granted for irrigation water with conditions.
The properties which Mr Zeestraten has developed since 2009 were placed on the market more than a year ago when they were described as a $54 million operation.
According to Overseas Investment Office information the new buyer intends to develop the properties, known as Five Farms, to maximise milk production.
Short-term development is expected to result in a significant increase in cow numbers and the amount of milk solids produced.
