DLA Piper has just announced the appointment of Aimee Credin and Diana Hartley as partners. As a leading global business law firm DLA Piper attracts the best talent, now bolstered with two more women partners.
Aimee Credin specialises in medico-legal law and has experience in general civil litigation. Her clients include a major international indemnity organisation that provides indemnity to the majority of medical and dental practitioners in New Zealand. Aimee has experience on a wide range of medico-legal matters including considerable litigation expertise appearing as counsel in all levels of the courts as well as numerous appearances before Tribunals. Aimee regularly appears in the Coroner's Courts.
'International trends promoting consumer rights have seen an increase in New Zealand for disciplinary cases for health practitioners,' she says. 'There has also been a marked increase in cases involving criticism for clinical only related matters, whereas previously discipline tended to be reserved for more aggravating conduct.'
'Whilst, because of ACC, New Zealand enjoys protection from personal damages litigation, international research has shown the greatest threat to any professional person is when his or her reputation or ability to practise, is in issue.' Through her experience in representing health professionals, Aimee has developed an expertise in protecting the reputation of DLA Piper's clients facing these threats. 'A common theme in many complaints, whether they arise out of negligence or otherwise, is a breakdown in the relationship with the health professional. It is often the product of poor communication. A key to minimise such professional fallout is to openly review the complaint or concern with the patient at the earliest opportunity,' she says.
Aimee was formerly a senior associate at DLA Piper New Zealand.
Diana Hartley practises resource management and local government law. She has most recently been advising Auckland Council on proposed Auckland Unitary Plan related hearings, including on rural urban boundary and zoning issues. She has previously been involved in the Environment Court hearings on the Auckland Art Gallery redevelopment, and in the Board of Inquiry hearing, in the matter of the Waterview Connection project.
Prior to her work in New Zealand, Diana completed an LLM at the University of Cambridge and worked in the UK on environmental and public law matters. 'Doing resource management work is great because you feel like you’re making a difference to a city,' she says. 'This works supports the vision for Auckland to be the world's most liveable city.' Diana joins from an Auckland-based law firm.
'Joining DLA Piper, a leading law firm with true global reach and sophisticated clients, is an exciting opportunity. We advise international clients doing business in New Zealand and local organisations doing business elsewhere,' says Diana.
With the arrival of Aimee and Diana, DLA Piper New Zealand has seven partners of 24 whom are women (29%), and the recent promotion of Joanna Simon to COO takes their Executive team to 67% female. This is in line with their ongoing commitment to foster diversity and inclusion, attract and progress talent, and create balanced teams to deliver the highest level of service to their clients.
Last year an independent news site reported DLA Piper New Zealand as the 'most female friendly law firm' with the highest number of women as partners (by percentage). DLA Piper New Zealand partner, Tracey Cross who chairs the Leadership Alliance for Women (LAW) programme, will be attending the Global Women's Leadership Summit in Chicago from 19-20 September 2016.
