The Shareholders' Association has handed out its 2015 Beacon Award for outstanding leadership to Tony Carter, chairman of Air New Zealand [NZX: AIR] and Fisher & Paykel Healthcare [NZX: FPH].

Association chairman John Hawkins said Mr Carter was a remarkable leader, strategist and motivator, yet retained a down to earth manner, and was never afraid to seek a range of views including from the association.

"His talents are illustrated by the success of Fisher & Paykel Healthcare and Air New Zealand where he inherited the chair of good companies and has made them truly great international companies", Mr Hawkins says.

"His peers recognised him last year when he was named Deloitte Top 200 Chairman of the Year. Now it is the turn of retail shareholders to also honour his achievements, and more importantly, his continuing promotion of the highest standards of governance, ethics and diversity in the corporate world."

Mr Carter, who received his Beacon at a dinner in Auckland last night, said he was honoured to receive the award.

“The role of a director is to be custodian for the shareholders’ investment, and I am very fortunate to be recognised by the Shareholders' Association in this way,” he said.

“The association plays an important role in advocating for good corporate governance, and I am humbled to receive this award. I also acknowledge some of the previous winners who have been at the forefront of improving corporate governance for many years."

Mr Carter is a former chief executive of the Foodstuffs grocery co-operative, whose operations include New World and Pak 'n Save supermarkets.

He is also a director of Fletcher Building [NZX: FBU] and ANZ Bank New Zealand.
