From July 1 it will cost nearly $50 more to get a drivers licence.

Transport Minister Steven Joyce today confirmed the fees for learner, restricted and full licence applications will rise to reflect the actual cost of providing the service.

He said driver licensing and testing fees were last reviewed in 2001 and for the last four years the cost of providing the services was not met by the fees charged.

Learner licence fees will increased from $79 to $91.90; restricted licence from $88.20 to $105.80 and full licence from $115.10 to $133.20.

The total cost increases from $282.30 to $330.90 – a little more than 17%.

Licence renewal fees will drop 3% to $43.
