Drought fears in the northern part of the North Island have eased, bringing relief to dairy farmers in Northland and parts of Waikato.

But dry weather in Canterbury and further south has farmers there worried unless there is rain soon.

Parts of Waikato have received more than 40mm of rain since Thursday and in Northland there have been reports of up to 80mm. Rain has also fallen in dry parts of Taranaki, Bay of Plenty and Nelson.

MetService is predicting for more rain over the northern part of the North Island, Taranaki and Nelson, but the remainder of the South Island and eastern regions of the North Island remain dry.

Drought conditions have been officially declared in Northland, North Auckland, Waikato and the Ruapehu district.
