Consumer caution set to continue – even with tax relief

Retail spending fell more than 1% in May, with broad falls across all categories, reports Stats NZ.

Retail card spending remains subdued and coming tax cuts may not translate into a shopping frenzy.

Statistics New Zealand data out today showed retail spending using electronic cards fell 1.1%, or $69 million, in May when compared with April.

Hospitality fell $25m, fuel dropped $16m, apparel
