Mighty River Power scooped the top energy company of the year award this week at the inaugural Deloitte Energy Excellence Awards in Wellington.
The black-tie awards dinner was attended by more than 550 guests from across the electricity and petroleum sectors, including visitors from Australia.
NBR understands that over 90 entries were received across the 10 award categories.
Associate Energy and Resources Minister Pansy Wong, called in to replace Ilam MP and newly appointed Minister for Earthquake Recovery Gerry Brownlee, delivered the event’s opening speech.
A recurring theme across speakers was that media coverage of the energy sector tends towards quick headlines for bad news and slow recognition for achievement.
Comedian David McPhail provided comic relief though a convincing impersonation of former prime minister Robert Muldoon, godfather of ‘think big’ energy projects.
The awards night was founded by Energy News publisher Matt Freeman.
Detailed coverage of the awards will be provided in tomorrow's print edition.
