Level 3 Crowne Plaza Hotel, Auckland,
Until June 29

Epson has raised its profile this month with a new printer that might well change the market and it has also linked the idea of the company producing high-quality printed material by sponsoring one of the photographic exhibitions in this month’s Auckland Photography Festival.

The show at the Crowne Plaza Hotel features the best of New Zealand in a number of categories; portrait, travel, weddings, illustrative, creative documentary, landscape and commercial.

Mike Hollman’s award-winning commercial / architectural photography is stunning but he is also a winner in the travel section with images that look though they could have been produced a century ago, the sepia like toned work recalling a by-gone era in China.

The illustrative work of Richard Wood combines elements of Lord of the Rings with Renaissance still life and portraiture, creating magical images.

In the wedding category Amy Schulz displays a way of using a mirrors to create a minimalist image while Chris Hill’s use of mirrors with multiple images provides a more animated view of a wedding. What the exhibition displays above all else is the remarkable range of tones and colours that can be achieved, partly by the photographer and partly in the printying.

This is where Epson’s new colour printer will come in handy. Most inkjet printers are sold at low prices with the company making profits by charging high prices for the ink cartridges but Epson has recently launched its new Ecotank printers, taking a much more radical approach. Buyeers pay a higher initial purchase price for the printer but the large built-in ink tank can print several thousand pages The L455  is a four-in-one multifunction device with a printer, scanner and copier, along with a fax machine and 30-page document feeder. It also provides USB and wifi connectivity.
