Ericsson has appointed Alfred Ling Ericsson New Zealand country manager.
Mr Ling (pictured) replaces the previous head, Jeff Travers, who has returned to work for Ericsson in Europe.
Mr Ling returned to Ericsson NZ from Ericsson Greater China, where he was head of Customer Unit China Central and West. His customers were the first in China to use Ericsson GPON Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) equipment, and China is now Ericsson’s fastest-growing GPON market.
After first joining Ericsson NZ in 1991, Mr Ling has accumulated nearly 20 years of experience with Ericsson in various senior executive positions in New Zealand, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, China and South East Asia. The roles have included sales, marketing, business development, and network engineering.
Arun Bansal, the regional head of Ericsson Southeast Asia and Oceania, said: “Alfred has a vast amount of experience that will help drive Ericsson’s business in New Zealand. The country is a key market for us and Ericsson is well placed for the numerous business opportunities with UFB, multimedia, mobile broadband and LTE.”
Mr Ling said: “I am delighted to return to New Zealand where I began my Ericsson career. The China market, where tens of millions of subscribers are using Ericsson GPON equipment, reflects the growing global demand for high-speed broadband – a demand clearly evident in New Zealand.”
Mr Ling added: “Since I left New Zealand a decade ago the industry has undergone phenomenal change, and we are moving closer to achieving the goal of a totally networked society.”
In addition to his positions with Ericsson, Mr Ling was also chairman of the Global Mobile Supplier Association (GSA) APAC Chapter during 2004-2005.
Mr Ling has an MBA from Victoria University, Wellington, and a bachelor degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering (Hon) from the University of Canterbury, Christchurch.
Mr Ling is married with five children and his interests include swimming and road and mountain cycling.
