ExportNZ has released its wish list to political parties in the run-up to the election.
Not surprisingly, its best policy approach favoured increasing export opportunities and cutting compliance costs.
It called for a continuation of the free trade agenda, while ensuring that New Zealand exporters had a competitive business environment to operate in. That included competitive tax rates, a flexible labour market and a reduction in RMA costs.
ExportNZ executive director Catherine Beard said reduced goverment spending would take the pressure off inflation, with a flow-on affect of keeping both interest rates and the value of the New Zealand dollar lower.
Strategies to boost the availably of venture capital, to attract direct foreign investment and to boost the leverage of companies, for instance facilitating better collaboration between companies on-shore so they could compete better offshore, were also called for by ExportNZ.
An increased government contribution to R&D, effective market development assistance to exporters and more efficient and competitive domestic and international transport options were other methods ExportNZ said would help expand the export sector, which in turn would help New Zealand pay its way in the world.
