Mark Weinberger will be the next global chairman and chief executive of Ernst and Young.
He succeeds Jim Turley, who has already announced that he will retire on 30 June having led Ernst & Young since 2001.
Reuters news agency suggests the appointment of Mr Weinberger, a Washington insider, is a sign that the accounting firm is planning closer links to the US government as its profession comes under increasing scrutiny.
Globally, EY recently announced revenues of $US22.9b for its fiscal year to June 30, 2011 and a global headcount of 152,000 people in 144 countries.
Mr Weinberger (50) is on the EY global executive and is the firm’s global head of tax. He was the assistant secretary of the US Treasury (tax policy) under President George W Bush and he was appointed to the US Social Security Advisory Board by President Clinton.
